There isn't really much to say regarding the legendary start option. With abundant resources luxuries will more commonly have eight copies.įollowing this trend, setting resources to sparse decreases copies, but seemingly increases diversity (slightly). the number of duplicates, and in exchange there are fewer different luxuries on the map.įor example: A map with standard size and resources, will have six copies of most luxuries, if not six then fewer. Abundant resources does not increase the total number of luxuries, what it does do is increase the amount of each luxury type, i.e. What surprised me the most was the effect on luxury resources. Abundant doesn't guarantee large amounts of each strategic resource, furthermore the early-game ones seem to increase more so than the others. The same seems to consistently be the case when looking at the total sum of strategic resources. So, as you can see the abundant and sparse settings add and remove about 40 % of bonus resources respectively. A total of 343 bonus resources (Bananas, Wheat, Cattle, Sheep, Deer, Fish and Stone) and 1007 units of strategic resources.Ĭonverting the numbers to percentages, in relation to the values for the standard setting, makes it a bit more manageable. I've organized the mean values of the results into the following tables.įor example: A huge Pangaea map with resources set to standard should on average have 114 luxuries including 13.7 different ones. I used Pangaea maps of tiny, standard and huge size, generating six of each combination (I know it's not the largest sample size). I basically just used the World Builder to generate random maps, allowing me to collect and compare the resource quantities, with resources set to standard, abundant, legendary start and sparse respectively. Some of you might already know what I've learned, but hopefully somebody will find it useful. I know a lot of people have a good feeling for what these options do, but I thought I would try to use the Civ 5 World Builder to do some "research". I also haven't been able to find any concrete information on the subject. I've never really understood exactly what the effects of the various settings for resources are when creating a game.
